What to wear when you're a student

I don't get why people dress slubby. Sweatpants aren't any easier to put on than regular pants. The same goes for worn-out hoodies vs regular tops. The funny thing is that the girls in the sweat pants usually look like they spent an hour doing their hair in the morning.

I don't think it's an issue of how long it takes to put on the clothes so much as it's an issue of comfort. For example, I would often wear sweats to my final exams because I wanted to be uber-comfortable. If there is an issue of time, it's probably more in the time it takes to select an outfit. For many it's probably easier to just throw together a so called "slubby" outfit than something nicer.

I cringe when I think of my college classroom style, overly preppy - I looked like a walking J. Crew/Ralph Lauren ad. I think my casual style is much more fashionable/appealing now.

Most days I'll wear jeans, shirts, sweaters, and coats - not all at once, of course! I like to balance comfortable clothing with a neat image, because the last thing I want to look is sloppy.

Honestly for me I don't find sweat pants anymore comfortable than a pair of jeans. But that's me and I would probably find being in sweat pants a little more uncomfortble in the end. To me they're just the same, so personally i'd pick the jeans over the sweats.

I wear Armani heels and Miu Miu to class and people do look at me oddly. Especially when I wore a specific Margiela piece...haha. What will they do when they see the L'Incognito shades?

I'm totally over this student life, where fashion-oriented peers are in worrisomely short supply.

^ I agree. When I first started university I really thought I'd be dressing differently after wearing school uniform for all those years but it's kind of embarrasing wearing heels and anything other than jeans and plain tops. Considering people have never heard of Miu Miu or Lanvin etc, it's depressing to wear it where it's not appreciated.

i was a ****** literally on my school days.

and to be quite honest, if i had dressed less flashy, i would've done better in school, cause from taking my time to dress up, to the attention... the last thing you want to focus on is studying.

so yeah, easy does best for school.

i couldve done easier with just some blk sweats and a tee. srsly.

Never, ever sweat pants! In fact the only time i would dress this casually is if i'm going to university at midnight to hand up a paper, and then it's leggings, ugg boots, and a long top (although as soon as i get in the door of my house i'm straight into the comfy clothes).
Usually i wear skinny jeans with cute flats and either a floaty blouse or cami, cute Sass & Bide tshirts, lots of long necklaces, cute cardis (either short or oversized and long). In winter i often wear black opaque tights with either dresses or shirt-dresses, short skirts, or tailored shorts (denim or black high waisted), with either slouchy boots or black embellished flats. Never wear heels to school- i go for comfort there, and they really would look too high-maintenance. A black trench coat if it's really freezing (it never gets that cold in Australia). And always my Marc Jacobs putty stam

The last few years at college I'd just wear whatever I loved at the time & what I felt comfortable about myself in. Mostly dresses with tights and cardigans or jeans and a few different layered tops but now that I'm taking more science subjects this semester I have to wear enclosed shoes (sneakers) and long pants for pracs so I'm scared this will screw with my fashion sense  Any suggestions how I can conform with the rules on these days but still look trendy?

Nope. I was a snazzy dresser until I started working in a lab. Not sure what kind of science you're doing, but aside from the safety issues you mentioned, comfort became a Very Big Deal for me, so anything that even slightly resembled a heel was out. Not to mention the fact that, when I did wear my nice clothes, I usually got some chemical like bleach on them (I know, I know, that's what lab coats are for).

Besides, I felt really weird being the only one who was dressed up when everyone else looked like an REI catalogue had vomited all over them.

cheap monday jeans (stretch, not stiff because they're horrible to sit in), hoodie, tank, socks.
that does comfy for me in school  and sneakers when i walk out the doors.

i don't think there is such a thing as 'student/college' style in my school
the idea of school style didn't exist in my wardrobe from highschool to now in my college years.

I've bought a few new cardys, jumpers and things to wear to uni, kind of understated chic

Most days: a v-neck tee-shirt, dark-washed, skinny Levi's, and for a pop of color - charcoal, heather, lime, turquoise and purple Asics. :buzz:

However, If I do feel the undying urge to dress-up, I will. A skirt, trousers, a dress...
Basically something other than jeans...
I go to an art school and as a result -
Most students feel they have to dress the part..
Esp. the fashion students..
Caricatures at best...
It's amusing...

being a fashion student we all dress like scruffs most of the time ..you dont want to get paint etc.on your best clothes.. i dress like an old man most of the time baggy cardis(the rooms are freezing) with shirts etc under neath and knee high socks
i also wear alot of skirts and tights .. i dress quite plainly with a few extreme accesories etc.
i wear alot of vinatge stuff, and tees and jeans etc.
depends on the lesson if i have business studies i can dress a bit more smarter .. oviously for design i dress right down ..

8 am class

soooooo

often it's nike athletic shorts (the multi color kind that EVERYONE has), tshirt, and patagonia with athletic shoes OR leggings, baggy tshirt, and uggs. kind of sad.

if i have class later, a dress and boots or something cute or jeans and a top

School = style killer, for me anyway. I thought I'd be dressing a lot differently when I entered university. For some reason I had this notion that university students are much more mature and thus dress in a sophisticated way. But was I wrong.

Almost every girl at my school own a pair of uggs, a month's worth of sweatpants, and a pashmina scarf. That is basically their "uniform." At first I took the time to dress up, but now it's just levis jeans, tshirt, blazer, coat, and flat boots. My school is super hilly, so heels really kill my feet. Also, we've had snow/slush on the ground for the last 3 or 4 months so anything other than boots is not an option. But I refuse to wear sweats if i'm not working out. And lets just say school = busy = workout schedule killer as well.
