Jennifer Garner seems to be the kind of person who REALLY cares about keeping appearances. I bet that as long as the larger public isn't aware of her husband's "activities" she's going to keep her happy little family together, the photo-ops with her daughters keep her relevant and it's also good for Ben's image and of course career.

Jen Garner's got a good publicist because her reputation is relatively unscathed after leaving two relationships by cheating. Most people don't even know about it. I just know because she went to the Alias producers to have Sydney/Vaughan broken up after she cheated on Michael Vartan with Ben (and then got pregnant).

Apparently she cheated on her first husband on the set of Daredevil with Ben Affleck (filming was in 2002, they filed for divorce in early 2003). But Ben didn't want a relationship. But her ex-husband later said this wasn't true, that they split up because she became a celebrity/famous and he didn't like the spotlight.

Anyway, she started dating Michael Vartan, her co-star on Alias a few months after filing for divorce (summer 2003). It was relatively high profile because their characters also dated on the show. Then she cheated on Michael with Ben in 2004, which was just before Season 4 started filming. During Season 4, Michael and Jen's characters were engaged on the show, so that made everything awkward. And supposedly Jen asked the producers to limit Michael's screen time after that so in Season 5, his character appeared in only 5 episodes (and they only brought him back for the last 3 because of fan reaction. The fans insisted his character be brought back for the series finale). This was also the season Jen got pregnant with Violet, which they wrote into the storyline for her.

I can't really verify the first story because I didn't follow Felicity; this was just rumored during her time on Alias. But the Alias stuff was talked about on Alias messageboards in 2005. Her reputation as a social climber is probably because within months of a split, she starts dating someone more famous.

And her publicist is amazing because everyone still sees her as sweet Jennifer Garner.

i knew she was married to Noel and that she dated these two but i didn't know it those relationships were so "close" one to another. wow, lots of info, can't believe she made those requests on Alias and that they actually acknowledged them.

it could be she was in love with Ben all that time until she actually got with him and married him. it's not that i don't believe there could be some other intentions behind it all, it's just that she strikes me as Stepford wife ever since she hooked up with Ben (and she seems really into him).

Lainey said that Jen wanted to push Ben into politics down the road, so I can't see her giving up whatever fantasy she has of being "first lady." Her acting career is kind of...non-existent. She's more of a celebrity mom. I have to say though, Ben is looking as good as he did when he was at his heights with Gwyneth on his arm -- but Jen has gotten really frumpy. Not a good look.

I think Blake and Ben would make an epic couple...I'd endorse it.

^yep. Jennifer Garner has a reputation for being a social climber actually, using her love-life to further her career and dumping boyfriends as soon as someone more useful comes along.
Considering how her career is going, I suspect she'll be hanging on Ben for dear life for years to come. Also, with all the dirt she most likely has on him (the gambling, the cheating, the booze) she could publicly ruin him if he tries to leave her.

I'm not disagreeing with your main point because I've heard the same things (on message boards mostly, but still), but I question the assertion that Michael Vartan was a move up the ladder from Scott Foley. Amongst my friends, no one knows who either one of them are. And while I'm at it, I guess I would also question the idea that Ben Affleck was a step up from Michael Vartan, because really. Post-Bennifer I, when he was running around the street in his underwear and dealing with tabloid stories about his back hair, I always thought that she was the one dating down.

Ben didn't go to Harvard, but Matt did (until he dropped out). Ben went to school in Vermont and LA (also never graduated). Ben's mom went to Harvard.

At the moment, he's not really anybody. But at the time, he was more recognizable because Alias was a hit show and he was doing films (albeit crappy rom coms with Jennifer Lopez). Definite step up from Scott Foley in terms of recognition. But it's been a while and he hasn't landed anything big. It's kind of like how six years ago, Orlando Bloom was considered a major star/A-lister. Nowadays, not so much (although he hasn't dropped as far as Vartan, he's not as relevant as he was in 2003).

Micheal Vartan has completely disappeared but at the time when Alias was big (first 2-3 seasons), he had a big following. Dumping Scott (a complete nobody) for her hot co-star in her hit serie was a smart move because it made her gossip fodder.

As for Ben, sh*t career or not, he is a household name and an Oscar winner. He'll always have a A-list name recognition, everybody knows who he is. It was a step-up from Vartan anyway you look at it. In Hollywood, movie actor trump Tv actor anyday of the week.

if i'm not mistaken there were few sightings of her and Rupert during her press for NLMG, so i don't think he/breakup if there is one in the first place is the reason for her MIA cus i've been wondering for awhile now on her absence when it comes to press....

I saw them near where I work in central London around three months ago, maybe? They were holding hands, crossing the road. They didn't look particularly happy or moody - just a couple waiting to cross the road, really! So they were fine a few months back.

And that just reminded me, wasn't there a picture of Affleck and Garner in front of the movie poster featuring Lopez and Vartan? I might be making that up, but if it's real, I have a very serious crush on whoever took that picture. Aw, this thread has made me nostalgic for Bennifer.
