Vogue Italia September 2014 by Steven Meisel

Logistics play a big role in things like these.

Yeah, but some people are inescapable. Like Gisele or Kate Moss. If you do not include them, like someone already said, this becomes just a pet list of a particular photographer. This cover simply lose its universality.

But don't all photographers have their 'pet-lists' ?

I am sure they do but then calling something the anniversary issue of the magazine becomes a bit of a sham because it's not the photographer's but the magazine's anniversary... that looks more like Meisel's anniversary to me...

regardless, I still find the cover quite week... even the first part of it which has the models 70% of whom I adore... if it was not foldable it would be less impressive... and if it was just its first part then the only thing which would stand out would be the models themselves rather then the photographer's artistic vision or great skills...

I agree with Gisele or Kirsten, but Kate? She's never been a Meisel favorite right?
She's more M&M or I&V

Jesus people, ofcourse these are models that Steven likes? What did you expect. They have been the most important models for Vogue Italia. Who cares about any of the other B-list photographers and models when there's Steven Meisel.

Gisele doesn't want to be photographed next to other models, Freja was not available and Meisel doesn't like Kate and Lara. Just deal with it.

I think it's definitely weird that Gisele wasn't on here because Meisel can definitely "persuade" Gisele to shoot with other girls, i.e., Louis Vuitton Fall 2013. Also, it's such an important issue. Other than scheduling conflicts, I can't see how she would miss it.

^but I bet Gisele got payed a lot of money for that LV campaign, I doubt this would have been the same. And at this point in her career she doesn´t need the exposure that being on a VI cover brings.

I think it would have been great to see Gisele, Kristen and Lara, there are a three of models that I don't think they should be there, like Aymeline, Anais Mali and Anna de Rijk.

Unpopular opinion but now that I am thinking it's not like this cover accompanied with the editorial was like the best thing that ever happened. Especially thinking in terms of how the modeling industry is now and that it doesn't excite masses like it did in the 90's and early 2000's. Gisele would have been on the main cover with the likes of big names like Naomi and Linda but would it even matter? 50 models for 50 years cover was like a dim light in effect compared to his 2004 cover. This cover was just signifying an anniversary and only that.

^ you're right it's just an anniversary for the magazine, but then I remembered why did they forget daria werbowy or carmen kass? here we go again ;-)

I almost find it strange that this magazine is acknowledging a time before Meisel

I think questioning some choices is something to discuss and members don't have to deal with it. The names members are calling, are ones who where on the cover or have been Meisels favourites. Once you expect on a anniversary cover.

I disagree with you by calling this the 50 most important models for Vogue Italia. Then were is Viktoriya Sasonkina, Snejana, Gemma, Freja, Arizona, Lara, Kirsten and i can name many more who had produced memorable covers more then once for Vogue Italia. Ofcourse not anyone can be on it, but to name these 50 the most important, no. And ofcourse he choose 50 models through 50 years, which I think it's fantastic. So I prefer to call this Meisels 50 models choices for VI.

Gisele does do groupshots, Lara was on the cover twice and worked a lot with Steven and is there a confirmation Freja wasn't available or are you just assuming that? Yes Meisel didn't work with Lara or Freja recently and probably doesn't like them that much anymore, but they weren't the only ones on this cover who didn't work with Meisel in a while.

The cover is quite weak, not epic at all. Any photographer can produce this. The only thing that is epic are 50 models. I love that Natasha, Stam and Sasha are on it. Missing a few big names and there are some models on it who I can do without, but overall good casting with the supers, icons, regulars and talents.

about Doutzen; I remember Natasha posted a photo on instagram with Sasha 7 weeks ago and Doutzen gave birth 4 weeks ago, it seems logic she wasn't on the cover.

fair point;-) but Lindberg, Roversi, Comte...etc. worked for the magazine and have created some iconic editorials...(endlessly reprinted or used throughout various magazines) that's all...
I don't find it strange that Meisel picks up his fav girls... it is almost natural... especially, when you are as influential as he is...

casting and meisel issues apart, does someone know what's in this magazine ? i doubt there's just this.
like i hope there's gonna be an Anna Piaggi hommage, that there're gonna be other photographers etc.
had to check, but she passed away 2 yrs ago. cant believe it.

wasnt it supposed to be released yesterday ?

^^This anniversary issue is the polar opposite of the one US Vogue did 2 years ago. It's very much focused on Vogue Italia's past. The issue is huge (884 pages) with tons of ads. The entire front of the book section consists of articles and old photos of the famous women that have been featured in the magazine (one page each). There's the Vogue Suggestions ed by Sednaoui, and then the three new editorials (Meisel, Lindbergh, Roversi). Finally, there is the photographers' portfolio with old photos by Weber, Elgort, McDean, Newton and others.

oops. yeah sorry ...
thanks both (koko and melancholy, and people who posted the content)

Anna is in the One hundred & More Icons section. They all get 2 pages each. Here's a list & the intro which you might like to read.
