Are you in on Victoria's secret? Now you can be, as first store to open in the UK
For years it was the shop your savvy friend, the one who was always making trips to LA and New York, bragged about.
Now Victoria’s Secret, the American lingerie super-brand, is to open a flagship superstore in London in 2012, on the corner of New Bond Sreet. While M&S, purveyor of lacy bras and cotton briefs to one in three British women, might blanch at the news, what’s most surprising is that Victoria’s Secret hasn’t made the move across the Atlantic sooner.
Because modern British women are the second-biggest consumers of lingerie in Europe (after the French, naturellement).
Behind its garish pink facade, Victoria’s Secret is a curious mix of sex and sanctity: the raciest Brazilian-cut knickers jostle for space with more well-upholstered undergarments.
While you may not yet have heard of its top-selling Miracle push-up bra for ‘cleavage beyond compare’, in the U.S. it’s impossible to ignore the sexy ad campaigns featuring the Victoria’s Secret Angels, an elite band of curvaceous models including Gisele Bundchen, Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum.
Yes, it occasionally wavers on the tacky side, but perhaps it’s best to think of it as M&S’s more excitable younger sister who wants to have a good time.
