Interviews with VS first-timers

Anne Vyalitsyna

On why it's her favorite show, "ever": "This is the only show that's all about the girls, all about fun, and you're looking as beautiful as you possibly can. That's what makes it so special. Most of the other shows, it's about a certain look, it's about a certain mood. And here, you pretty much go and have the best time ever. But then you prepare for weeks before, that comes with a lot of hard work."

On how she prepared: "Well, where do I start? This year has been really competitive, I think. I think everybody went really out of their way to prepare for the show. Literally, for three weeks, it's been a really intense workout, a really intense diet. I'm very happy to have it over tonight, so I can go eat, drink, and celebrate."

The first thing she's going to eat, postshow: "To be honest, I was actually thinking about it last night. I'm a big fruit person, and I wasn't even able to have fruit for the last three weeks, so fruit for me is the thing. I miss my oranges."
On walking while her boyfriend, Maroon 5's Adam Levine, is performing: "We're just going to maybe do a little cute moment, but we don't want to be overdramatic. I'm a model, he's a singer, we're just doing our jobs and just happen to be together, so maybe we'll do a cute moment but nothing crazy. I'm very excited to have him next to me, it's very special."

On trading diet and workout tips with the other models: "I don't really see these girls very much until we all come together, because we're all really busy. But I'm really looking forward to actually talking to everybody and seeing how everybody's been doing it. What works for me, diet-wise, is just pure protein — I don't eat meat — so either tofu or fish and steamed vegetables. Egg whites. That's pretty much it. And in smaller amounts. I know with some girls, just being on fruit only works, I heard Adriana [Lima] is doing some kind of liquid or no-liquid thing, which I'm really excited to get some tips about. But you just have to figure out what works with your body."


Karlie Kloss

On walking for the first time: "I have goosebumps thinking about tonight, I'm definitely a little nervous. I just hope I don't knock anybody out with my wings, that's all I'm worried about. And I think Kanye [West] is on stage while I have those big wings on, so I'll have to tell him, 'Kanye, get out of the way, because these wings are coming through!' They are — I'm not joking — they're huge."

On whether she'll switch up her signature walk: "I think the only difference [from other shows] is that I get to be me. I get to smile, I get to blow kisses . . . I get to do anything I want on that darn runway. Usually, they're like, 'Straight forward, no swinging, no hips, stop, look straight in the camera, turn left, come back.' It's very military-like to do a Prada show, or another show. I guess I sort of do my own thing anyway, but . . . this show, they want you to be you, to be the most beautiful you can be and they want you to have fun. And I think that it shows when you are having fun."

On how she prepped for the show: "Nothing out of the ordinary, maybe an extra couple of butt lifts in the last couple of weeks, but just my regular biking, running, ballet. I don't know, I guess this is my first time so I'll find out soon enough if it was enough. My butt will be shaking out there, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing."

On hoping to be an Angel one day: "I think that it's something that every girl dreams of. I feel lucky that I get the opportunity to be here and in a way, live the dream for so many girls. I don't know how I'm going to do with those wings on my back, I'm either going to sink or fly. Right now I'm just enjoying it, and it's going to be fun out there."


Cameron Russell

On the show: "It's pretty crazy! I've never done a show that's this dramatic and big. It's exciting, it'll be a good story to tell my kids."

On her stress level: "Right now I'm feeling pretty confident, but I feel like right before I go out — and I realize millions of people are going to be staring at me in my underwear — I may feel less confident."

The first thing she did after confirmation: "I went and YouTubed the show, to see what it looked like. I actually had never seen it before. I don't know how I did that, since I'm an American, but I watched the show online, and I was like, 'Oh my God, there's a lot of views — a lot of people watch this.'"

On her reaction when she found out she would be walking: "I was so surprised. I never thought that I could do the show, it seemed so hard to me. It's not my dream, it's bigger than my dream. The Victoria's Secret show, for Asians girls, it's very difficult to get it. But now I'm here!"

On her nerve level: "Before I knew I was going to be in the show, I was nervous — I watched the videos of last year, every year — but now that I'm here, I'm fine, I'm good. I'm just going to enjoy."

On how fellow Chinese model Liu Wen helped her prepare: "I asked her a lot of questions yesterday about the Victoria's Secret show, about what to do, because I was so nervous."


Karmen Pedaru

On whether she's nervous: "Yeah, of course! I'm going to be in my bikini on the runway. Anything can go wrong, so of course it's stressful."

On the anticipation: "The past two years I've been wishing to be here, and finally I'm here. I mean, all the most beautiful girls are out here, so being one of them, it's a great honor."

On getting wings her first time walking: "I'm very happy about that."

Her preshow prep: "My job is to be a model, so I take care of myself all year round. I always watch what I eat, so I don't really do any special preparation, only maybe facials or massages to relax myself, but that's pretty much it."

On aspiring to be an Angel: "I don't know, I don't think I would be a good Angel — I'm not a smiley type or any of that. But doing the show or working for some catalogs is great!"


Joan Smalls

On being a part of the show for the first time: "It's one of those moments you hope for your career. I'm excited for the performances and to be able to walk while the performers are there. You're so accustomed to watching it on TV, and it being a glamorous show, so being a part of it is super exciting."

On what she's most nervous about: "The dimension of my wings. You sometimes forget how big they are, so you have to be careful of the girl coming and going."

On how she prepped: "Work out a lot, go to the gym every day, do a lot of cardio."

On which Angel she hopes to channel: "I look up to the glamorous Amazons of Victoria's Secret — the Naomis, the Tyras, the Heidis, the Giseles. I think those women represent what a woman should be and embody."

On her postshow plans: "I'll probably be at the afterparty for a little bit, and then bed."

It all looks interesting... Doutzen looks so understated. She's usually speeding down the runway about to tackle someone and she looks so amazingly stunning!

Hopefully Karmen P can really show emotion when the show comes out. I was worried for her
