Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2013

I love the new commercial since they've stepped away from Michael Bay's nonsensical explosions, but part of me just isn't as WOW'd by them anymore. Not like the Angels in Venice commercial, although I thought the 2008 one was really well done. Maybe it has to do with the music selection they choose.

I've been looking back at some of the shows and I've been getting such strong nostalgia. I think VS really missed their mark when they started promoting girls to Angel status that weren't ready or hadn't really proven their worth. Izabel and Selita were not good substitutes for Gisele and Tyra, and I think VS thought they needed more models to make up for the start power they had lost instead of grooming a select models to take over (like they did with Ale). I mean what happened with girls like Oluchi, she was STUNNING and even did a few events for the Backstage Sexy books. She looked like she had all the right things to be an angel in the making, way more than Chanel or Selita or Lais (I still think Emanuela wasn't given enough of a chance).

IMO, Selita/Izabel/Marisa is where it started to go down, and they should have just transitioned to Karolina/Miranda/Doutzen until Rosie/Candice came along and then Behati/Karlie. I think Rosie would have been a total bombshell for the brand so sad to see that she's gone.

At the end of the game I know VS is looking for popular "celebrity" models to promote the brand, but it really destroys the value of these coveted Angel spots when VS is just handing them out to girls that can't even walk (cough Lily cough).

I completely agree with you. :flower: Angels should earn their spots! They should let them grow and them make them Angels, not the other way around, like it's been since what 2006?!

even us, who follow regularly the board, we are sometimes unsure who is an Angel and who is not
So I am sure mainstream audience has no idea who the Angels are apart from the veteran (Adri/Ale/Doutzen) and Candice

Not to mention, the media will call any model who works for VS an Angel. They just toss the title around.

Yes! very true!
did you know that Kylie Biscutti, or whatever her name was, is a former VS Angel and she left because she believes this work does not fit with her beliefs?

When I saw that I almost broke my screen

Agree with you 100%! :flower:

Um, Marisa has been working with vs since around same time as Alessandra. So she definitely "earned" her wings and wasnt made an official VS Angel overnight. Fact.

So to say VS went downhill with Marisa is just wrong/ doesnt have any ground behind it. Marisa's star power at the time of her peak career was way larger then Selita/Izabel. So I wouldnt put her into the same boat with them.

VS went downhill when they hired Erin, Lindsay, Lily and Co.

Izabel didn't replace Gisele, Miranda did. Izabel became Angel in 2005 and when Gisele left in 2OO7, Miranda became Angel.

VS doesn't use celebrity models. A celebrity model is someone like a Paris Hilton or Kendall Jenner.

Yup. Oh, the 2009 era. That's when VS overnight introduced like 8 more angels. It was a disaster. I miss it when it was about quality rather than quantity.

Well, i think Izabel Goulart was a terrific Angel. She LOVES the brand, an still do the show, 9 years and counting. She always say that is her favorite time of the year. A model with cero DIVA EGO a la Miranda, Marisa (and maybe Erin, we will see), who came every year to walk even when they no renewed her Angel contrac. I think that say a lot about her commitment, and dont saw VS just like a plataform to make more money modeling, or even worse... To land an acting career!
She was craying in 2009 at the fittings, 4 years later of her debut!

Agreed. I also get confused by the whole wing stuff. When I first watched VS Shows I assumed that only Angels were allowed to wear the wings but was later proved wrong. Although I don't necessarily mind having other girls wearing the wings (loved them on Constance this year), I think it would just give the actual Angels more priviliges and prestige if they were the only ones allowed to wear them.

ok, I know Karlie gets a lot of crap here so I'm not trying to do that, but in the new Holiday commercial posted in post #580 you really can see how bad her walk is compared to the other girls. It just looks so out of place. I don't even think her walk is terrible - it is her signature - but it needs a time and place and this commercial is not it! it just looks so disjointed compared to the other girls.

Yes, you're right about Izabel, sorry had my dates confused.

Re: celebrities. That's why I put "celebrity" in quotation marks and not model. Of course VS doesn't use celebrities as models, but you better believe that they like girls who are dating famous guys (Miranda with Orlando, etc.)

And JuliaX is right, Marisa had been working for the catalogs for a very long time. But I still thought her jump to sudden angel was quick given that she had solely been relegated to catalogs.

But I mean look at this photo, it's just too much.

Interesting quotes on what it takes to be an Angel:

Victoria’s Secret executives rely on one specific quality to sell underwear, Richard Habberley at DNA Model Management told Women’s Wear Daily.

“The merchants drive the decisions on the Angels. They [Victoria's Secret] try the girls out, and certain girls sell product. They’re women that appeal to other women. And they’re special because they never appear in men’s magazines. Once you start to do that, they become threatening [to potential female customers],” said Habberley.

In other words, it’s imperative that Victoria’s Secret customers like the models it features.

It also sheds insight into why the retailer famously rejected Kate Upton. Her constant sexy pictorials and commercials are threatening to other women and would turn off potential customers.

Meanwhile, the top Victoria’s Secret Angels are wives and mothers who are often photographed with their families.

(on a side note, I'm pretty positive Miranda has done mens' magazines like GQ; Maxim, etc quite a few times)

Right, its just another marketing ploy to make the VS Angels holier than thou. All the Angels have been on the covers of GQ and Esquire mulitple times with solo covers and group covers.

Although, I must say, the overwhelming aesthetic of VS is more ethereal, doll-like with a good mix of cuteness and sex appeal (candice, miranda, erin, tyra, the girls from the 90s etc) They are definitely softer than high fashion models and more exotic than typical men's magazine girls.
